High‐performance liquid chromatography analysis of rubber allergens in protective gloves used in health care

Abstract: A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method developed for analysis of zinc dithiocarbamates was validated and used to perform a survey of disposable medical gloves used in southern Sweden. The gloves were extracted with acetone at room temperature for 10 min by shaking. The extracts were injected into a polyether ether ketone lined HPLC column, and peaks were analysed by a diode-array detector. The survey shows that of 19 gloves analysed, 10 contained zinc diethyldithiocarbamate (0.070-3.5 mg/g), 3 … Show more

“…To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on HCWs in which a survey of the contact allergens that are actually present in work materials has been performed. No thiurams were detected by chemical analysis, which is in line with previous reports . However, participants sometimes also reported the occupational use of gloves, disinfectants or moisturizers other than those procured.…”

“…For hand disinfectants, information was supplied by the manufacturers. All rubber gloves were analysed for rubber additives with high‐performance liquid chromatography, as previously described . Inclusion of rubber additives was based on previous and present analyses at the Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology (DOED), Malmö, as well as on literature data .…”

“…Quantitative analyses of TCMTB were performed with a high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method suitable for identifying allergens in rubber items, as 2‐mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) and other chemically related benzothiazole derivatives are easily analysed in this system.…”

“…Comparison of retention time and the UV spectrum with a reference sample of acetophenone azine established the identification of the peak eluting at ∼20 min. The spectrum had a characteristic shape that was very different from those of other known rubber additives normally screened with this HPLC method . No other peaks in the chromatograms could be identified.…”
