High-performance wavelength-locked diode lasers

Abstract: Rapidly maturing industrial laser applications are placing ever-tighter constraints on spectral width and wavelength emission stability over varying operating temperatures of high power diode laser pump sources. For example, improved power scaling and efficiency can be achieved by pumping the narrow upper laser level of Nd:YAG solid state lasers at 885 nm and the 1532-nm absorption band of Er:YAG solid state lasers, though taking full advantage of these configurations requires wavelength-locked pump sources. n… Show more

“…Currently, the best known alternative is to use wavelength locked laser diodes [9] whose emission is always centered on the peak absorption regime of the active medium. However, they come at the cost of reduced efficiency and enhanced price owing to additional components and packaging requirements in each module.…”

“…Second, VBGs allow for independent control of linewidth and temperature stability range. Third, the diode efficiency can be maintained through the judicious choice of front facet and VBG reflectivity 10 . Finally, VBGs can used in bar-based and single-emitter packages with ease, and can be implemented into fast axis lenses 11 .…”

“…In addition, the center wavelength shifts by changing the temperature and the driving current, which is obstructive for pumping applications with small absorption bandwidths. Wavelength stabilization of high-power diode laser modules is an important means for more efficient pumping of solid-state lasers with a narrow absorption bandwidth [4][5][6][7][8][9] .…”
