High plasma adenosine levels in overweight/obese pregnant women

Abstract: We aim to investigate whether overweight/obese pregnant women have elevated plasma levels of adenosine associated with increased consumption of high-calorie food. Sixty women were included. They were divided into lean (n = 23 and n = 12) or overweight/obese (n = 7 and n = 18) non-pregnant and pregnant women, respectively. Clinical records and maternal blood samples were collected after informed consent. A self-reported dietary questionnaire was also completed. Plasma adenosine levels were determined with high-… Show more

“…Literature suggests that blueberries consumption has been associated with amelioration of obesity as well as diminution of obesity-related pro-inflammatory molecules (Badillo et al, 2017;Burnstock & Gentile, 2018;Cáceres-Medina et al, 2015;Margalef et al, 2017;Noratto et al, 2016;Oviedo-Solís, Cornejo-Manzo, & Murillo-Ortiz, 2018;Pandolfi et al, 2015;Wyckoff, Evans, Manasse, Butryn, & Forman, 2017). Thus, we included blueberries as beneficial health-promoting food in hypocaloric diet as suggested by others (Wu, Yang, et al, 2018;Zhang, Ma, Luo, & Li, 2018).…”

“…These agents play key roles in maintaining many important metabolic functions. High plasma levels of nucleoside/nucleotides such as adenosine and uridine have been reported under conditions of obesity, acting on G protein-coupled adenosine and P2Y receptors (P2YRs) of the purinergic receptor family (11,12). P2Y receptors such as P2Y 1 R and P2Y 14 R have been shown to play a significant role in the regulation of leptin secretion and insulin sensitivity (13,14).…”

“…A review about adenosine and adipogenesis is available [121]. High plasma levels of adenosine were found in children with obesity [122] and in overweight pregnant women [123]. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is an obesity-related condition.…”
