High-pressure syntheses and crystal structures of orthorhombic DyGaO3 and trigonal GaBO3

Abstract: Orthorhombic dysprosium orthogallate DyGaO3 and trigonal gallium orthoborate GaBO3 were synthesized in a Walker-type multianvil apparatus under high-pressure/high-temperature conditions of 8.5 GPa/1350 °C and 8 GPa/700 °C, respectively. Both crystal structures could be determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data collected at room temperature. The orthorhombic dysprosium orthogallate crystallizes in the space group Pnma (Z = 4) with the parameters a = 552.6(2), b = 754.5(2), c = 527.7(2) pm, V = 0.22002… Show more

“…The In or Al2 atoms form 12 isolated MO 6 octahedra per unit cell, which fill the holes in the structure along the4 inversion axis (depicted in yellow). The Al1-O and Ga-O distances of the edge-sharing double-octahedra are with average values of 1.89 and 1.99 Å in good accordance with those reported in the literature [18][19][20][21][22][23]. However, presumably because of the shared edge, the octahedra are slightly tilted with average angles of 175.2°and 174.0°instead of 180°.…”

“…The bond length and bond angles are listed in Table 1. It is worthwhile to note that our crystal structure (cell constants, bond distances and angles) agrees very closely with those reported by Vitzthum et al [18]. Table 1.…”

“…The B2O3 [13], Li2O-B2O3 [5,6], B2O3-PbO-PbF2 [17] systems have been proved to be suitable flux for growing calcite-type borates. Recently, Vitzthum et al have also reported the structure of GaBO3 determined from crystals synthesized under high pressure [18]. We report a flux-based crystal growth procedure under ambient pressures to grow crystals up to 4 × 4 × 0.2 mm 3 in size.…”

“…The best synthesis of Ga 5 B 12 O 25 (OH) was carried out with β‐Ga 2 O 3 (Strem Chemicals, Kehl, Germany, 99.9 %) and H 3 BO 3 (Carl Roth, Karlsruhe, Germany, 99.5 %) in the stoichiometric ratio of Ga:B=1:2.4 according to Equation . The reaction product additionally contained GaBO 3 and an unidentified byproduct. true50.166667emGa2normalO34pt+4pt240.166667emnormalH3BO320.166667emGa5normalB12normalO25(OH)4pt+4pt350.166667emnormalH2normalO …”
