Moving Bed Biological Reactor (MBBR) is an expanding technology for post-denitrification at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In Malmö, Sweden, the municipal wastewater is treated at Sjölunda and Klagshamn WWTPs, both equipped with MBBR processes for postdenitrification since over a decade. The two MBBRs have different operational strategies, adjusted to different requirements and different main plant configuration. The long-term operational results and experiences presented here, show differences in specific load, denitrification rate, carbon dosage, nitrite formation, phosphorus load and condition of carrier material and biofilm appearance.
