High-resolution additive light field near-eye display by switchable Pancharatnam–Berry phase lenses

Abstract: Conventional head-mounted displays present different images to each eye, and thereby create three-dimensional (3D) sensation for viewers. This method can only control the stimulus to vergence but not accommodation, which is located at the apparent location of the physical displays. The disrupted coupling between vergence and accommodation could cause considerable visual discomfort. To address this problem, in this paper a novel multi-focal plane 3D display system is proposed. A stack of switchable liquid cryst… Show more

“…However, to achieve high performances, very complex fabrication processes are needed. [13,14,21,[29][30][31][32][33][34] The PB microlenses made of liquid crystals are particularly attractive because of their close to 100% efficiency and switchable focal lengths. [19,[24][25][26] The phase profiles desired for lensing can also be realized with the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phases [27,28] by using birefringent materials or metasurfaces with spatially variant optical axes.…”

“…In Figure B, two switchable PB LC lenses are stacked together, working as a tunable lens with four discrete focal lengths. As a result, four image planes can be realized . The LC director distribution of the PB LC lens is shown in right side of Figure B.…”

“…The key components of multiplane displays using the time‐multiplexing method are fast tunable optical devices, such as liquid lens, deformable mirror, and liquid crystal (LC) devices . For instance, Hua et al realized a multiplane optical see‐through (OST) AR display utilizing a tunable liquid lens.…”
