Abstract:The biostratigraphy of Sinemurian to lower Toarcian calcareous nannofossils has been investigated in the Sancerre-Couy core (Paris Basin), which contains a mixed assemblage of species with affinities to the northern and southern areas of the peritethyan realm, thus allowing for the use and calibration of the Mediterranean Province (Italy/S France) and NW Europe (UK) biozonation schemes. This study is based on semi-quantitative analyses of the calcareous nannofossil assemblage performed on 145 samples and the recorded bioevents are calibrated to the NW European Ammonite Zonation and to a new organic carbon isotope curve based on 385 data points. The main bioevents, i.e. the first occurrences of Parhabdolithus liasicus, Crepidolithus pliensbachensis, Crepidolithus crassus, Mitrolithus lenticularis, Similiscutum cruciulus sensu lato, Lotharingius hauffii, Crepidolithus cavus and Lotharingius sigillatus as well as the last occurrence of Parhabdolithus robustus, have been identified. However, we show that a large number of standard biostratigraphic markers show inconsistent occurrences at the base and top of their range, possibly accounting for some of the significant discrepancies observed between the different domains. In addition to the nine main bioevents used for the biozonation of the core, we document an additional 50 distinct bioevents, evaluate their reliability and discuss their potential significance by comparison to previous studies. A total of five significant negative organic carbon isotope excursions are identified and defined in the Paris Basin including the well-documented Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary event. One positive excursion is further defined in the Pliensbachian interval. Our calibration of high-resolution calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy to ammonite biostratigraphy and organic carbon isotopes represents a new stratigraphic reference for the Lower Jurassic series.

Abstract. One of the main controversial themes in palaeoclimatology involves elucidating whether climate during the Jurassic was warmer than the present day and if it was the same over Pangaea, with no major latitudinal gradients. There has been an abundance of evidence of oscillations in seawater temperature throughout the Jurassic. The Pliensbachian (Early Jurassic) constitutes a distinctive time interval for which several seawater temperature oscillations, including an exceptional cooling event, have been documented. To constrain the timing and magnitude of these climate changes, the Rodiles section of the Asturian Basin (Northern Spain), a well exposed succession of the uppermost Sinemurian, Pliensbachian and Lower Toarcian deposits, has been studied. A total of 562 beds were measured and sampled for ammonites, for biochronostratigraphical purposes, and for belemnites, to determine the palaeoclimatic evolution through stable isotope studies. Comparison of the recorded latest Sinemurian, Pliensbachian and Early Toarcian changes in seawater palaeotemperature with other European sections allows characterization of several climatic changes that are likely of a global extent. A warming interval partly coinciding with a δ 13 C bel negative excursion was recorded at the Late Sinemurian. After a "normal" temperature interval, with temperatures close to average values of the Late Sinemurian-Early Toarcian period, a new warming interval containing a short-lived positive δ 13 C bel peak, developed during the Early-Late Pliensbachian transition. The Late Pliensbachian represents an outstanding cooling interval containing a δ 13 C bel positive excursion interrupted by a small negative δ 13 C bel peak. Finally, the Early Toarcian represented an exceptional warming period, which has been pointed out as being responsible for the prominent Early Toarcian mass extinction.

Here, we present an integrated stratigraphical study across the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian interval cropping out into the Portuguese reference section of S. Pedro de Moel (Lusitanian Basin). Characterized by marl-limestone alternations of the Água de Madeiros Formation (subdivided into Polvoeira and Praia da Pedra Lisa members), this succession is particularly dominated by organic-rich facies (black shales) and contains a diverse fauna of benthic and nektonic macrofossils. This stratigraphic and sedimentary setting is the basis for a high-resolution carbon isotope study, constrained by new ammonite biochronostratigraphic determinations and other palaeontological data. The new ammonite collections characterize the Oxynotum and Raricostatum chronozones and the Raricostatum, Macdonnelli and Aplanatum subchronozones, and accurately identify the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary in this western Iberian margin setting. Carbon isotope measurements were made from bulk carbonate (δ 13 C carb ) from 351 samples, representing the Oxynotum to earliest Jamesoni (early Taylori) Chronozone intervals. The carbon isotope values exhibited a large range, varying between +2.85‰ in the Oxynotum Subchronozone to very negative values observed in some limestone beds from the Raricostatum Subchronozone (lowest reaching -6.7‰), a variation clearly controlled by lithological and facies changes. Despite these strong anomalous isotopically light values (below -2‰), which are clearly associated with organic matter degradation and early diagenesis, the δ 13 C carb curve shows a long-term negative trend across the Oxynotum to the early Taylori Subchronozone interval. This tendency is reversed around 5 m above the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary, and the δ 13 C carb values become positive correlative with an absence of organic matter and argillaceous sediments in the limestone beds of Praia da Pedra Lisa Member. Although the δ 13 C data recorded across the Sinemurian-Pliensbachian of the Lusitanian Basin had been controlled by internal depositional conditions, the general evolution of carbon isotopes agrees with the trend recognized in other basins.• Key words: carbon isotopes, ammonite biochronostratigraphy, organic-rich marly limestone, Sinemurian-Pliensbachian boundary, Portugal.
