High resolution electron cyclotron emission temperature profile and fluctuation diagnostic for Alcator C-Mod

Abstract: A new second harmonic heterodyne electron cyclotron emission system with high spatial resolution (⩽15 mm) and a large number of channels (32) for dense profile coverage will be installed on Alcator C-Mod. The system will provide detailed radial electron temperature profiles and core temperature fluctuation measurements. The collection system is composed of elliptical and parabolic mirrors coupled to two overmoded waveguides to provide high poloidal spatial resolution necessary for T̃e measurements. Four radiom… Show more

“…Grating-polychromator ECE (GPC ECE) diagnostics [4] provide a total of 28 core and edge T e channels with instrument-limited imaging sizes of ∼ 9 mm, digitized at 20 kHz. Additionally, a high-resolution 32-channel heterodyne ECE (HRECE) diagnostic [21] provides plasma coverage with sub-centimeter spot sizes in the edge. Both have sufficient spatial resolution to distinguish edge T e (though they cannot resolve the temperature pedestal structure), along with the time resolution necessary to track ELM crashes.…”

“…For the first time, experimental measurements demonstrate a direct dynamic relation between LHCD generated fast electrons and a fishbone-like mode. A time history of the central electron temperature inferred by the slow electron cyclotron emission (ECE) grating polychromator (GPC) 18 shows that the mode growth begins at the maximum of the inferred core T e , which falls to a minimum by the disappearance of the mode [see dotted lines in Fig. 5-a)].…”
