High-resolution modeling of elevator power consumption

Abstract: This paper proposes a framework for modeling the instantaneous power consumption of individual elevators and elevator groups based on passenger traffic. Though elevators have a key role in the modern urban society, they have remained as rather neglected appliances in the energy efficiency research. To accelerate the energy efficiency studies of elevators, this paper has two major contributions. First, we propose means to model the instantaneous power consumption of individual elevators and elevator groups and … Show more

“…The impact of nominal speed decrease on the journey times of elevators was modelled with an elevator simulation framework depicted in [9]. The background distribution of nominal loads, group sizes, shaft heights and usage category (including building type) were based on the elevator metadata available at [13].…”

“…In this article, we evaluate the cost of DR events of different length at different hours of the day by simulating the speed decrease of the appliances. We use modeling approaches depicted earlier in [7], [8], [9] to simulate the passenger traffic, time delay and the power consumption profiles of the designated appliances.…”

“…On the other hand, it is widely accepted that the dispatching algorithm, i.e., the group controller, has a significant impact on the energy consumption of the elevator group [8], [9], [10], which means it can also be used to alter the overall energy consumption during a period of time. For example, the objective function of the group controller could be momentarily switched to favor energy efficiency over traffic handling capacity.…”

“…The simulation of the aggregated elevator population was done with a unique elevator simulation framework which is introduced and tested in [9]. The simulation works by generating passengers according to the passenger distribution profiles (see Fig.…”

“…For high-rise buildings, where elevators are the dominant vertical transportation tools, how to achieve the energy conservation of elevators is considerable to be investigated. Furthermore, for the normal operation of elevators in a building, it is necessary to build an internet of things (IoT) [7], with the help of remote data acquisition technology [8], which is able to monitor electric devices [9], provide predictive diagnosis [10,11] and realize optimal control [12].…”
