High resolution photolithography for direct view active matrix organic light‐emitting diode augmented reality displays

Abstract: -High-resolution RGB organic light-emitting diode frontplane is a key enabler for direct-view transparent augmented reality displays. In this paper, we demonstrate 1250 ppi passive displays and semi-transparent active displays. Organic light-emitting diode photolithography can provide pixel density above 1000 ppi while keeping effective emission area high because of high aperture ratio. Patterns with 2 μm line pitch were successfully transferred to emission layers, indicating possible further pixel density sca… Show more

“…Even though OLED stacks are extremely fragile and degrade heavily upon exposure to atmosphere (air and moisture) and solvents used in semiconductor fabrication, we have been clearing different technical roadblocks to reach a higher manufacturability level. We have shown multicolor arrays, 1 µm feature size and 1250 ppi multicolor passive displays [5]. Similarly, we have demonstrated patterning of organic photodetectors (based on polymers and small molecules) [6].…”

“…The field of molecular electronics and photonics offers numerous potential applications for the demonstrated method: from the design of photonic structures via chain-conformation patterning 8 , 33 and displays 59 , 60 to the fabrication of high-performance field-effect transistors and organic thermoelectric generators by harnessing the capability for local doping 61 , 62 , as well as manipulating electronic 11 , 63 and thermal 13 conductivities via molecular orientation. Figure 6 shows typical feature sizes required for a selection of electronic and photonic devices and structures.…”
