High-resolution spatial-distribution maps of road transport exhaust emissions in Chile, 1990–2020

Abstract: Abstract. This description paper presents a detailed and consistent estimate and analysis of exhaust pollutant emissions generated by Chile's road transport activity for the period 1990–2020. The complete database for the period 1990–2020 is available at the following DOI: https://doi.org/10.17632/z69m8xm843.2 (Osses et al., 2021). Emissions are provided at a high spatial resolution (0.01∘ × 0.01∘) over continental Chile from 18.5 to 53.2∘ S, including local pollutants (CO; volatile organic compounds, VOCs; NO… Show more

“…There have been efforts to provide gridded (not national-level) inventories for specific types of vehicles and vehicle fuels for regions outside the European Union [e.g. [42][43][44]. Future research on urban transportation and air quality will benefit from the inclusion of these inventories.…”

“…Bogotá, Quito, Santiago, and São Paulo are busy urban centers where urban emissions comprise a significant source of ozone precursors. In these cities, a significant fraction of ozone precursors is emitted by vehicular fleets and has decreased according to air quality control measures such as the introduction of better fuel quality, sulfur content reduction, enforcement of threeway catalytic converters, stricter emission standards for new fleet vehicles and mandatory periodic technical inspection for inuse vehicles (Andrade et al, 2017;Nogueira et al, 2021;Osses et al, 2022). In addition to anthropogenic emissions, these cities exhibit particularities explaining the ozone and surface exposure levels reached, which are described below.…”

“…Traffic routes and transportation networks provide important information to better understand the development, urbanization, and population of a country (Osses et al, 2022). In VHR land-cover mapping research, the traffic route is a fundamental land-cover type to reveal urban patterns and reflect regional traffic (Boguszewski et al, 2020;Xia et al, 2023;Hu et al, 2023).…”
