High‐resolution TanDEM‐X DEM: An accurate method to estimate lava flow volumes at Nyamulagira Volcano (D. R. Congo)

Abstract: Nyamulagira and Nyiragongo are two of the most active volcanoes in Africa, but their eruptive histories are poorly known. Assessing lava flow volumes in the region remains difficult, as field surveys are often impossible and available Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) do not have adequate spatial or temporal resolutions. We therefore use TerraSAR‐X add‐on for Digital Elevation Measurement (TanDEM‐X) interferometry to produce a series of 0.15 arc sec (∼5 m) DEMs from between 2011 and 2012 over these volcanoes. “…Both the vertical accuracy and spatial resolution of the WorldDEM™ (pixel 0.4 in or approximately 12 m at the Equator) make this dataset suitable for topographic mapping at scales of 1:10,000 and smaller with contour lines at 5 m intervals. The TanDEM-X-derived DEMs were already used in a few branches of science, including forestry [18][19][20], glaciology [21], and volcanology [22].…”

“…This is most successfully achieved with bistatic image pairs (close to simultaneously acquired, but spatially separated pairs of images) acquired by satellite missions designed for the measurement of topography (e.g. DLR's TanDEM-X, Albino et al, 2015). Although the effectiveness of SAR measurements of topography during an effusive eruption have been demonstrated (Poland, 2014), such bistatic data are not yet widely available for use in monitoring.…”

“…These eruptions often involved dyke/fissure systems propagating downslope from a caldera above a chamber at ∼3-4 km depth (Toombs and Wadge, 2012;Wauthier et al, 2013) to effusive vents on the flanks. The 2011-2012 eruption was particularly voluminous and long-lived (305 × 10 6 m 3 ; 143 days) from a NE-oriented fissure12 km from the caldera (Albino et al, 2015).…”
