Urochondra setulosa (Trin.) C.E. Hubbard is a coastal halophytic grass thriving on the coastal dunes along the Pakistani seashore. This grass could be useful in coastal sand dune stabilization using seawater irrigation. The purpose of this investigation was to test the hypothesis that Ca 2+ (0.0, 2.5, 5.0, 10.0 and 50.0 mmol/L) alleviates the adverse effects of KCl, MgSO 4 , NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 at 0, 200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000 mmol/L on the germination of Urochondra setulosa. Seed germination was inhibited with increase in salt concentration with few seeds germinated at and above 400 mmol/L concentration. No seed germinated in any of the KCl treatments. Inclusion of CaCl 2 substantially alleviated the inhibitory effects of all salts. Germination was higher under photoperiod in comparison to those seeds germinated under complete darkness. Among the CaCl 2 concentrations used, 10 mmol/L was most effective in alleviating salinity effects and allowing few seeds to germinate at 1000 mmol/L KCl, MgSO 4 , NaCl and Na 2 SO 4 solution.

We studied the germination responses of Arthrocnemum macrostachyum, Juncus acutus and Schoenus nigricans to saline stress caused by different salt types. The germination percentage and mean time to germination data were obtained by incubating seeds for 30 d in 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5% saline solutions of NaCl, MgCl 2 , MgSO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 at 30/20 8C and with a 12 h photoperiod. A. macrostachyum was the most tolerant species to salinity during the germination (65% in 2% NaCl). S. nigricans showed the lowest germination (none germinated in salt and only 26% in distilled water). J. acutus showed intermediate behaviour between the two above species, its germination being inhibited by high salt concentrations. The sulphates had less inhibitory effect than the equivalent chloride concentrations. #

Persistent and Transient Inhibition of Seed Germination by Fractions of Methanol-Water Extract of Wheat Straw

The objectives of this work were to investigate the effects of wheat straw constituents on total seed germination and on time needed for seed germination to start and to assess the usefulness of evaluating the recovery of germination to help guide the screening for a sequential search of bioactive natural phytochemicals. Dose-response bioassays of lettuce seed germination to increasing concentrations of six fractions of methanol-water extract were conducted and whenever inhibition of germination exceeded 90% non-germinated seeds were transferred to distilled water and recovery of germination investigated. Only the fractions essentially composed by neutral polar compounds and by acids failed to inhibit total germination. Fractions composed by strong acids, basic compounds and fatty acids plus steroids completely inhibited total germination at 5mg mL −1 , the former also inhibiting germination by more than 90% at 1mg mL −1 . In these three fractions the concentration necessary for 100% inhibition was estimated to range between 4.1 mg mL −1 and 4.4mg mL −1 . Time needed for germination to start was always significantly increased even by fractions that failed to affect total germination. Basic compounds were the most effective in delaying the start of germination increasing it more than 4-fold at 2mg mL −1 from 1.0 to 4.3 days. When non-germinated seeds were transferred to distilled water persistence of complete inhibition was only found with strong acids, almost full persistence with basic compounds. Thus the consideration of recovery of germination makes possible a more informed choice of the fraction to select for further bioassay guided search for phytochemical with herbicide activity.
