High Satisfaction in Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis Patients on Enhanced Discharge Pathway

Abstract: Background: Recently, there have been several reports of using an enhanced discharge pathway following posterior spinal fusion (PSF) in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). No previous studies have prospectively examined patient satisfaction of patients with AIS using an enhanced discharge pathway. The purpose of this study was to evaluate patient satisfaction with an enhanced discharge pathway for PSF and whether patients felt that their length of stay was appropriate. … Show more

“…In our quality assessment for spine surgery the 44% [ 15 , 23 , 27 , 29 , 32 38 , 40 – 42 , 46 49 , 51 , 55 , 56 , 61 , 67 , 68 , 70 ] of the studies were rated strong, 25% [ 17 , 18 , 21 , 22 , 25 , 28 , 31 , 39 , 43 , 44 , 60 , 62 , 63 , 65 ] were rated moderate, and 32% [ 16 , 19 , 20 , 24 , 26 , 30 , 45 , 50 , 52 54 , 57 59 , 64 , 66 , 69 , 71 ] were rated weak. Methodological weaknesses that led to moderate or weak quality scores often included the lack of a sample size justification, power description, or variance and effect estimates, the lack of subjects selected or recruited from the same population, the lack of results evaluation more than once over in time, the lack of blinded assessor and the lack of measurement of potential confounding variables.…”

“…Over the last 5 years, multiple standardized postoperative care pathways for patients undergoing posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for the treatment of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) have been published. [1][2][3][4] A key feature of these AIS care pathways is a multimodal approach to pain control. Several non-opioid analgesic medications, including gabapentinoids, acetaminophen (paracetamol), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and muscle relaxants (Valium [diazepam]), are given in combination with opioid medications.…”

“…It will not only cause body deformity, back pain, mobility inconvenience, psychological burden and so on, more importantly, affect the heart and lung functions of patients [3][4] . Therefore, early conservative treatment is of great significance to the disease [5][6][7][8][9][10] . However, the poor compliance behaviors of teenagers after discharge seriously affects the therapeutic effect [11] , in order to study the rehabilitation training of patients after discharge and the compliance with the correct brace wear, and to further improve the compliance behaviors of patients after discharge, we implemented outof-hospital extended nursing for patients with idiopathic : 92-95 (1) Patients meet the diagnostic criteria for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis [12] .…”
