High-Speed PAM4-Based Optical SDM Interconnects With Directly Modulated Long-Wavelength VCSEL

Abstract: This paper reports the demonstration of high-speed PAM-4 transmission using a 1.5-µm single-mode vertical cavity surface emitting laser (SM-VCSEL) over multicore fiber with 7 cores over different distances. We have successfully generated up to 70 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM-4) signals with a VCSEL in optical back-to-back, and transmitted 50 Gbaud PAM-4 signals over both 1-km dispersion-uncompensated and 10-km dispersion-compensated in each core, enabling a total data throughput of 700 Gbps ov… Show more

“…For 10 km distance, the notch is shifted away from the carrier frequency, leading again to a good EVM. This EVM degradation caused by the chromatic dispersion notch can be alleviated by adding a dispersion compensation module [32]. Only a small degradation in EVM is observed from optical B2B to 10 km fiber.…”

“…Besides the work on improving device performance, other techniques such as advanced modulation scheme (e.g., four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4)), analog coherent modulation [11], wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) or space division multiplexing (SDM) [12] are utilized to increase the Datacom bandwidth. In this paper, we review several modulation techniques for Datacom, from VCSEL direct modulation to silicon photonics modulators then to hybrid silicon modulators.…”

“…Meanwhile, spatial division multiplexing (SDM) techniques provide an alternative approach to cope with an ever-increasing capacity demand, showing a great potential to achieve 1-Tbps and beyond [9]. Novel system techniques, such as vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with multi-core fiber (MCF), are promising to increase the spatial bandwidth density [10]. Although the cost-effective broadband opto-electrical components have been developing rapidly to keep pace with the capacity requirement of optical short-reach systems, the impairments, especially the nonlinear ones, introduced by these components to the high-speed short-reach communication systems cannot be neglected and become a significant issue that hinders the capacity improvement [2].…”
