Systematic studies of the deformation mechanisms of multilayer transition metal nitride coatings TiN/CrN, TiN/NbN, and NbN/CrN, and corresponding reference coatings of TiN, NbN, and CrN deposited by a direct current (dc) magnetron sputtering process onto silicon h100i have been performed. Mechanical characterization was conducted using a combination of microindentation and nanoindentation in the load range 30 to 150 mN and 0.5 to 3.5 mN, respectively. For both load ranges, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in situ indentation was used to observe the indentation process including any pileup, sink-in, and fracture mechanisms specific to each coating. The coatings' microstructure, both before and after indentation, was analyzed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was possible to both correlate the indentation load-displacement response to surface roughness effects and fracture modes (substrate and film cracking) and observe deformation mechanisms within the coatings.

Adhesive Behaviors of the Aluminum Alloy-Based CrN and TiN Coating Films for Ocean Plant

In the present study, TiN and CrN films were coated by arc ion plating equipment onto aluminum alloy substrate, A2024. The film thickness was about 4.65 μm. TiN and CrN films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray equipments. The Young's modulus and the micro-Vickers hardness of aluminum substrate were modified by the ceramic film coatings. The difference in Young's modulus between substrate and coating film would affect on the wear resistance. The critical load, Lc, was 75.8 N for TiN and 85.5 N for CrN. It indicated from the observation of optical micrographs for TiN and CrN films that lots of cracks widely propagated toward the both sides of scratch track in the early stage of MODEⅠ. TiN film began to delaminate completely at MODEⅡ stage. The substrate was finally glittered at MODE Ⅲstage. For CrN film, a few crack can be observed at MODEⅠstage. The delamination of film was not still occurred at MODEⅡ and then was happened at MODE Ⅲ. This agrees with critical load measurement which the adhesive strength was greater for CrN film than for TiN film. Consequently, it was difficult for CrN to delaminate because the adhesive strength was excellent against Al substrate. The wear process, which the film adheres and the ball transfers, could be enhanced because of the increase in loading. The wear weight of ball was less for CrN than for TiN. This means that the wear damage of ball was greater for TiN than for CrN film. It is also obvious that it was difficult to delaminate because the CrN coating film has high toughness. The coefficient of friction was less for CrN coating film than for TiN film.

Scratch tests and pin-on-disk wear tests were performed to clarify the cracking and delaminating behavior of CrN coatings. The CrN films were coated onto an aluminum alloy substrate, JIS A2024, by an arc ion plating method. Eight types of single-layered coating and multilayered coatings were prepared by changing the bias voltage during the deposition. L CI and L CII values were not improved by increasing the number of layers. The critical loads of the single-layered coatings decreased with increasing the bias voltage. It appears that, for the multilayered coatings, the combination of bias voltages influenced the critical loads. The critical loads strongly depended on dynamic hardness and Young's modulus. In particular, the critical loads of the multilayered coatings were influenced by the properties of the intermediate and bottom layers as well as the surface roughness, hardness and Young's modulus of the top layer. The large film delamination for single-layered coatings deposited using a high bias voltage occurred during pin-on-disk wear tests even though the critical loads of the single-layered coatings were higher than those of the multilayered coatings. If the brittle top layer could be broken and delaminated by the sliding contact, the ductile bottom layer coated under a bias voltage of 0 V could endure the complete delamination of film.
