“…Samples were fired in batches of three identical pellets using an inert atmosphere (Ar flow) at a temperature of 700 °C in a horizontal tube furnace. This temperature was chosen for compatibility with previous C-Al experiments [16] and to avoid the viscosity of the melted Al particles becoming too low which it was felt may cause some leakage in the early stages of firing. This treatment is insufficient to cause full sintering of the pure ceramics which generally requires heating in the range 1200-1800 °C.…”
