High Throughput Satellites: An Analytical Approach

Abstract: KA-SAT has represented a new generation of High Throughput Satellites (HTS) with the largest number of spots delivering a capacity of 90 Gb/s for a wide variety of services ranging from internet access in homes, to satellite news gathering and domestic broadcasting. HTS systems require a critical approach in terms of communication system requirements and payload analysis. This paper presents the typical system architecture of such systems and provides an analytical approach to elements that are required for th… Show more

“…It should be noted that EIRP pk = P TWT − L o/p − L ant + D pk (2) where P TWT is the useful traveling wave tube (TWT) RF power in dBW, L o/p is the repeater output losses in dB, L ant is the antenna losses in dB, D pk is the peak directivity in dBi. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) [12] over a hexagonal cell is shown in Fig. 8 where 90.7% of the area is circular and therefore linear.…”

“…The G/T analysis can be expressed as (12) where G T θ is the G/T in dB/K at off-set angle of θ, G T pk is the peak G/T in dB/K at the boresight of the beam and cell (the beam and cell are assumed to be concentric), θ eoc is the full eoc beamwidth in degrees, and β is as defined earlier and equal to 4. G T pk − G T eoc in dB.…”

“…CCI has been identified as one of the factors which has significant system performance‐limiting potential. It is a major issue to be addressed in HTS system design [6–10]. Systems that reuse frequency by adopting DOP transmission are prone to system‐ and medium‐induced depolarisation, which introduces interference power into the corresponding orthogonal channel, with consequent effects on system performance [11].…”
