Higher feeding diets effects on age and liveweight gain at puberty in crossbred Nelore × Hereford heifers

Abstract: This study was conducted to determine the age and liveweight at puberty of 120 crossbred beef heifers submitted to four diets to achieve predetermined weight gains (kg/day): 0.5 (G500; n = 32), 0.75 (G750; n = 32), 1.0 (G1000; n = 29), and 1.25 (G1250; n = 27). Animals were classified depending on their level of crossing between Nelore (N) and Hereford (H): 25%N-75%H, 37.5%N-63.5%H, 43.7%N-56.7%H, 50%N-50%H, and 75%N-25%H. Reproductive evaluation was performed at the beginning and at the end of the experimenta… Show more

“…Recently, we have demonstrated an increase in follicular diameter in heifers fed high energy compared with animals fed low energy from 60 to 30 days prior to puberty (Barcellos et al, 2014). Summers et al (2014) reported that conception rates increased in heifers with higher ADG based on corn level supplementation.…”

“…Composition of the supplement used to produce four rates of weight gain (kg day -1 ) were as follows: G500 (n = 32) composed of 4.5 (dry matter (DM) kg animal (G500), 0.75 kg day -1 (G750), 1.0 kg day -1 (G1000), and 1.25 kg day -1 (G1250) from weaning to puberty according to Barcellos et al (2014).…”

“…LW gain in heifers from LW class 55% (0.14 kg day -1 ) was lower than that in heifers from LW class 65% (0.22 kg day -1 ), which in turn was lower than that of animals from LW class 75% (0.43 kg day -1 ). This result helps understand the reproductive performance of heifers at first mating because the rate of LW gain at this stage of development affects the physiological factors that trigger the onset of reproduction and age at puberty (GASSER et al, 2006;COOKE et al, 2008;ALLEN et al, 2012;EBORN et al, 2013;BARCELLOS et al, 2014;FARIAS et al, 2018).…”

“…This result is due to animal performance in the phases that preceded the beginning of mating, especially from 18 to 24 months, considering that these phases presented the most significant difference in LW gain in the present study. An unfavorable metabolic condition caused by low nutrient intake reduces the concentration of glucose, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I), compromising the secretion of hypothalamic-pituitary and gonadotrophins in ovarian cells (WHITE et al, 2007;BARCELLOS et al, 2014).…”
