Highlights from the Respiratory Failure and Mechanical Ventilation 2020 Conference

Abstract: The Respiratory Intensive Care Assembly of the European Respiratory Society organised the first Respiratory Failure and Mechanical Ventilation Conference in Berlin in February 2020. The conference covered acute and chronic respiratory failure in both adults and children. During this 3-day conference, patient selection, diagnostic strategies and treatment options were discussed by international experts. Lectures delivered during the event have been summarised by Early Career Members of the Assembly and take-hom… Show more

“…The COVID-19 outbreak, which spread globally in recent years, caused millions of deaths and disabilities. Most patients who are infected with the virus have breathing problems, acute hypoxic respiratory failure, and some may need urgent care because of dyspnea (Withers, et al, 2021). Using noninvasive strategies are of major importance in COVID-19 patients because of numerous life-threatening complications associated with intubation and mechanical ventilation (Tobin, 2020 and Tobin et al, 2020).…”

“…The duration of mechanical ventilation refers to the time patients receive invasive respiratory support through tracheal intubation. However, ventilator use also increases the risk of complications, such as ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP), right ventricular dysfunction, and respiratory muscle injury ( 1 ), prolonging a patient's hospital stay and increasing both medical costs ( 2 ) and mortality rates. VAP is the second most common hospital-acquired infection resulting from PICU hospitalization ( 3 ).…”

“…A recent highlight of Assembly 2 was our organisation of the inaugural Respiratory Failure and Mechanical Ventilation conference, which was held in Berlin in March 2020. This was a great success, with attendees arriving from around the world to enjoy engaging and educational seminars delivered by expert panels, workshops and lectures within the streams of adult acute respiratory failure, chronic respiratory failure and paediatric respiratory failure [ 1 ]. Early career members had the opportunity to present cases and posters and to chair sessions.…”
