Highly Active Nonpromoted Hydrotreating Catalysts through the Controlled Growth of a Supported Hexagonal WS2 Phase

Abstract: Highly active nonpromoted W-based hydrotreating catalysts are prepared through a molecular approach with a control of each step. This approach yields WS2 crystallites exhibiting hexagonal 2D morphology, which have been characterized by combining XPS and HR HAADF-STEM techniques and ab initio molecular modeling. The first step is the impregnation of a well-defined precursor, [W(OEt)5]2, grafted onto partially dehydroxylated amorphous silica–alumina (ASA) and characterized at the molecular level by spectroscopi… Show more

“…3f, The four strong peaks at 34.8 eV, 35.4 eV, 36.7 eV and 37.4 eV can be indexed as W 4+ 4f and W 6+ 4f. 32 The decomposition of the W 4f spectrum shows that the incorporation of tungsten element. This is consistent with the previous results.…”

“…Sulfide model catalysts have also been analyzed by HR HAADF-STEM in order to confirm the orientation of MoS 2 slabs determined by GI-EXAFS. In fact, with STEM in the HAADF detection mode, intensity is proportional to the squared atomic number (Z²) of the observed atoms [54,55], making feasible the detection of MoS 2 slabs oriented perpendicular to the incident electron beam and thus parallel to the surface and possibly the determination of the associated 2D morphology [56][57][58][59]. The analysis was also performed on samples sulfided at 300 °C to compare HAADF-STEM images to GI-EXAFS results.…”

“…In comparison with Mo catalysts, W based ones are less documented in literature . Although a considerable amount of research has been made on their activity, selectivity and in general catalytic properties of the W catalysts, an accurate description of the active sites is still lacking . So far the available CO spectra representing W‐based catalyst are rather limited, and no reports were established on the assignment of their specific IR/CO bands, neither on the quantification of these edge sites.…”

“…[18] Although a considerable amount of research has been made on their activity, selectivity and in general catalytic properties of the W catalysts, an accurate description of the active sites is still lacking. [13,19,20] So far the available CO spectra representing W-based catalyst are rather limited, and no reports were established on the assignment of their specific IR/CO bands, neither on the quantification of these edge sites. Hence, this paper presents an insight into the sulfided W/Al 2 O 3 system characterized through IR spectroscopy and DFT calculation.…”
