Highly Efficient Inverted D:A1:A2 Ternary Blend Organic Photovoltaics Combining a Ladder-type Non-Fullerene Acceptor and a Fullerene Acceptor

Abstract: A formylated benzodi(cyclopentadithiophene) (BDCPDT) ladder-type structure with forced coplanarity is coupled with two 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone (IC) moieties via olefination to form a non-fullerene acceptor, BDCPDT-IC. The BDCPDT-IC, as an acceptor (A) with broad light-absorbing ability and excellent solution processability, is combined with a second PCBM acceptor (A) and a medium band gap polymer, PBDB-T, as the donor (D) to form a ternary blend with gradient HOMO/LUMO energy alignments and panchromati… Show more

“…Moreover, under continuous heating at 100 °C, the PCE decreases only ≈14% after 1.5 h and then retains the same value showing its durability. Cheng and co‐workers also reported the same FREA (namely, BDCPDT‐IC , Figure ) . High PCE of 9.33% was reported with inverted OSCs using PBDB‐T: BDCPDT‐IC blend.…”

“…Apart from modifying morphology and improving charge dynamics, the incorporation of FA into binary OPVs based on NFA can increase PCE by virtue of other effects such as energy transfer, cascade energy level alignment, [99][100][101][102] and others. 103,104 Energy transfer: Fullerene derivatives as the third component with absorption in the short wavelength region usually serve as an energy donor to form energy transfer to the NFAs.…”

“…NFAs based on the 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile (IC) electronwithdrawing moiety have been the most efficient material system until now, which have been widely adopted in preparing high performance ternary OSCs. [80][81][82][83][84] The representative molecular structures for the IC family are shown in Scheme 1. Most of these molecules are low band gap materials with an optical band gap (E opt g ) o 1.6 eV, and hence commonly show intense light absorption in the long wavelength range.…”
