Highly Polymerized Wine-Red Carbon Nitride to Enhance Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Performance of Hematite

Abstract: Polymeric carbon nitride photocatalyst has attracted much attention due to its visible light response and high chemical stability. However, bulk carbon nitride has a wide band gap and low polymerization, limiting its photocatalytic performance for water splitting. Synthesizing highly polymerized carbon nitride with a narrow band gap still remains challenging. Herein, we propose an ionothermal protocol using supramolecular precursors to fabricate highly polymerized wine-red carbon nitride (WRCN) nanosheets. Bot… Show more

“…The Fourier transform RAMAN (FT-RAMAN) spectrum of PCN presented typical skeletal vibrations of carbon nitride heterocycle at 1200–1800, 980, and 700 cm −1 corresponding to the C-N stretching vibrations, symmetric N-breathing mode of heptazine unit, and in-plane bending vibration of the C-N=C linkage, respectively ( Figure S1 ). 24 , 25 The APCN and NPCN has shown identical peaks like that of PCN with more pronounced intensity. The NPCN catalyst disclosed a shoulder peak at 1208 cm −1 signifying a change in the carbon nitride framework ( Figure 1 D).…”

“…Graphitic carbon nitride (g‐C 3 N 4 ) is a very promising metal‐free semiconductor, and has been the subject of intensive investigation over the past decade due to its low cost, high stability and modest band gap (2.7 eV) which allows visible light photocatalytic activity. [ 97–101 ] Wang et al. synthesized porous C 3 N 4 decorated Cu‐ion‐implanted TiO 2 nanotube arrays (PCN/Cu‐TNA) for PEC water splitting.…”

“…The molten phase depends largely on the selection of precursors, which may alter the PCN film deposition route and influence the PCN properties such as the band gap structure, the degree of polymerization, and the crystallinity [16,[31][32][33][34]. Melamine sublimates at 335°C, melts at 354°C, and transforms into melem at 389°C [35][36][37].…”
