Highly uniform Ru nanoparticles over N-doped carbon: pH and temperature-universal hydrogen release from water reduction

Abstract: Highly uniform ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles over N-doped carbon (Ru@CN) was designed and confirmed as a promising candidate for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a wide pH range.

“…By contrast, the I D / I G for Co 2 P/Ru/CNT is reduced to 0.56, demonstrating the much reduced amount of defect sites after Ru ultrafine nanoparticles deposition, which is consistent with previous reports . Ru nanoparticles are inclined to be anchored by electronegative N in the carbon framework during pyrolysis process, passivating the corresponding defects conspicuously and thus playing an effective role in tuning the chemical stability of Co 2 P/Ru/CNT . According to thermogravimetric analysis (TGA, Figure S4, Supporting Information), the mass content of Co 2 P in Co 2 P/CNT is ≈51.2 wt%, the loading of Ru nanoparticles in Co 2 P/Ru/CNT is estimated to be 2.98 wt%.…”

“…The marked lattice plane distance of 0.216 nm corresponds well to (002) plane of Ru in Figure f, the diffraction rings in the electron diffraction pattern of Co 2 P/Ru/CNT can be assigned to (100) and (101) planes of Ru and (220) and (002) planes of Co 2 P, respectively, further proving that Co 2 P/Ru/CNT composites are successfully synthesized. It can be inferred that melamine, cobalt acetylacetonate, RuCl 3 ·3H 2 O species may undergo thermal condensation and thermal pyrolysis processes during the high temperature, forming the N‐doped graphitic nanotubes in situ anchored with Ru and Co 2 P nanoparticles . The elemental mapping images (Figure g–k) of single nanotube clearly reveal the homogenous distribution of C, Ru, and N elements along the nanotube and Co and P elements are mainly located at the tip of the nanotube with a uniform coverage of carbon.…”

“…A second relatively wide set of supported systems are those prepared by copyrolysis of C, N, and Ru sources. Thus, Wang and co‐workers obtained 2.4 nm Ru NPs on N‐doped graphene‐like nanosheets (Ru@CN) through the copyrolysis of glucosamine, melamine, and RuCl 3 . Their Ru@CN system gave values of η 0 ≈0 mV and η 10 =32 mV at pH 14 and excellent stability after 2000 CV cycles (Table , entry 12).…”

“…The origin of high electrocatalytic activity for Ru‐CN/MC was further evaluated by electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) via determining the capacitance of double layer (C dl ) in non‐Faradic region, which is linearly proportional to ECSA . As calculated from the CV data at scan rate of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 mV s −1 (Figure S5), Ru‐CN/MC possesses a C dl of 23.5 mF cm −2 based on the obtained slope of fitting line (Figure a).…”
