Hints towards the emergent nature of gravity

Abstract: A possible way out of the conundrum of quantum gravity is the proposal that general relativity (GR) emerges from an underlying microscopic description. Despite recent interest in the emergent gravity program within the physics as well as the philosophy community, an assessment of the theoretical evidence for this idea is lacking at the moment. We intend to fill this gap in the literature by discussing the main arguments in favour of the hypothesis that the metric field and its dynamics are emergent. First, we d… Show more

“…Instead it was argued that gravity (general relativity) emerges from quantum field theory (see Refs. [34,36]). The one loop effective action automatically contains terms proportional to the cosmological constant, the Einstein-Hilbert action, plus "curvature-squared" terms.…”

“…Conversely, the theory of gravity, a paradigmatic example of a physical theory drawing heavily on differential geometry, has achieved remarkable breakthroughs recently thanks to its extensive use of a thermodynamic approach [15][16][17]; for topical reviews and more extensive references see, e.g., [18,19].…”

“…For this to be a conclusive argument, one would have to show that the analogy is exact, that this formal analogy makes black holes thermodynamic systems in all relevant aspects, and that one could not provide a coherent physical interpretation of black hole thermodynamics without inferring underlying microstructure (Dougherty & Callender, ; Prunkl & Timpson, ; Wallace, ; ). I will not dwell here on the subtleties of that debate; the interested reader is referred to Linnemann and Visser ()—and references therein, especially Jacobson (), Padmanabhan (), and Verlinde ()—for a comprehensive appraisal of these hints towards a microstructure underlying GR.…”
