“…Furthermore, in the squirrel monkey varia tion of BChE was reported in ependymal cells of different regions. Manocha et al [1967] found little activity in these cells of the spinal cord, while the same cells in the fourth ventricle of this animal were strongly positive , Similar dif ferences are also noted in the neurons of the peripheral nervous system of different ani mals [Cauna et al, 1961;Tewari and Bourne, 1963;Harkonen, 1964;Kokko, 1965;Huikuri, 1966]. Moreover, the cent ral nervous system of the frog [Shen et al, 1955], turtle (unpublished data) and hedgehog [Sood and Unnikumar, 1982] exhibit nehligible amounts of this enzyme.…”

“…On the basis of the avail able data one cannot conclude on the specific functions of AChE in the central nervous system, hence more physiological and pharmacological studies have to be made on AChE and acetylcholine simul taneously, using the modern methods at the regional and cellular levels. There is no systematic study of NSE dis tribution in the forebrain of mammals except some fragmentary reports dealing with one or two areas [Tewari and Bourne, 1963;Mathisen and Blackstad, 1964;Shantha et al, 1968]. However, in the hindbrain of mammals the enzyme has been reported in all the neurons and in neuropil \Sood and Bohra, 1977;Hafiza, 1980, 1981;Sood, 1978Sood, ,1979, The present study demonstrated strong activity of the enzyme in the neurons and neuropil of a few areas of the neocortex, thalamus, hypo thalamus and septal region, while in the other regions the enzyme was found only in neurons or in blood vessels.…”
