“…On the basis of the avail able data one cannot conclude on the specific functions of AChE in the central nervous system, hence more physiological and pharmacological studies have to be made on AChE and acetylcholine simul taneously, using the modern methods at the regional and cellular levels. There is no systematic study of NSE dis tribution in the forebrain of mammals except some fragmentary reports dealing with one or two areas [Tewari and Bourne, 1963;Mathisen and Blackstad, 1964;Shantha et al, 1968]. However, in the hindbrain of mammals the enzyme has been reported in all the neurons and in neuropil \Sood and Bohra, 1977;Hafiza, 1980, 1981;Sood, 1978Sood, ,1979, The present study demonstrated strong activity of the enzyme in the neurons and neuropil of a few areas of the neocortex, thalamus, hypo thalamus and septal region, while in the other regions the enzyme was found only in neurons or in blood vessels.…”
