Histological study on the vesicular glands of castrated and non-castrated bucks

Abstract: The present study was investigated the histological structure of the vesicular glands of eight mature castrated and noncastrated zaraibi bucks (4 animals/ each group). Generally, the vesicular gland of bucks was compact and lobulated gland. It was covered by a muscular capsule sending fibro-muscular septa dividing the gland into irregular unequal lobules. Each lobule was formed of numerous secretory acini and few amount of inter-acinar connective tissue stroma. Each lobule had a central collecting sinus to col… Show more

“…The presence of vacuoles in columnar and basal cells is also described in several species such as buffaloes, bulls, goats, (Ghonimi et al, 2014b;Adhikary et al, 2015;Emam et al, 2016) but were not mentioned in swine nor in horses (Badia et al, 2006;Scheeren et al, 2018), which suggests that it is a characteristic of the vesicular glands of ruminants.…”

“…The glandular epithelium is classified as pseudostratified, with the presence of columnar secretory cells as the main and basal cells sparsely distributed among the columnars, this is the description also used for other species (Ghonimi et al, 2014b;Adhikary et al, 2015;Emam et al, 2016) except for horses that have stratified epithelium (Scheeren et al, 2018).…”

“…In the majority of cases, sperm mix with secretions from these glands. When they were first activated during sexual stimulation, their secretions appeared as fine droplets in the urethral meatus of the erect penis (Emam et al, 2016).…”

“…Seminal vesicles are paired glands that produce and act as a reservoir of seminal fluid (Emam et al, 2016) and, thus, are associated with the production and secretion of various substances, such as neutral mucins and protein‐bound sialomucins (Gadegone & Sapkal, 1983) and a large amount of fructose (Crichton et al, 1981; Krutzsch et al, 1976; Mokkapati & Dominic, 1976; Rajalakshmi & Prasad, 1970). In bats, these glands are described as being located laterally to the ampullary glands, with both having a very similar structure (Martin et al, 1995).…”
