“…Earlier studies demonstrated a varied acute LC50 values of chlorpyrifos for different fish but the data for long-term LC50 of chlorpyrifos for fish is lacking. Mishra and Devi (2014) reported the 96-h LC50 of chlorpyrifos for adult spotted snakehead (Channa punctatus) as 812 µg/L, which is almost similar to our study. Oruç (2010) found the 96-h LC50 of chlorpyrifos for adult nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) as 154 µg/L, which is about five times lower than we reported for Banded Gourami.…”

“…The behavioral changes that were recorded consisted of slower movements and swimming sideways might be attributed to the neurodegenerative changes that were reported in the optic tectum which in turn affect the functioning of motor coordination of the fish's body (Kermer et al, 2004). Mishra and Devi (2014) described similar lesions in the optic tectum following the administration of a sublethal dose of organophosphate pesticide Chlorpyrifos. Described lesions were mainly consisted of spongiosis, congestion, degeneration and necrosis of the different layers of the optic tectum.…”

“…The effects of chlorpyrifos on rainbow trout brain have been scarcely studied, despite these being extensively reported in other fish species (Xing et al 2010;Yen et al 2011;Khalil et al 2013;Mishra & Devi 2014). For example, Xing et al (2010) indicated that chlorpyrifos induced AChE inhibition in the brain of common carp.…”

“…Various nontarget organisms, such as fish, exposed to pesticides and water pollution may experience adverse biological effects including biochemical alterations (Bernet et al 1999;Burkepile et al 2000). The biochemical half-life of these toxic substances in the environment is long and may lead to physiological changes resulting in tissue damage (Roy et al 2006;Xing et al 2012;Mishra & Devi 2014). Thus, given the important role of fish in the human food chain, the adverse effects of pesticides on fish (Oruç 2010).…”
