History Taking as a Diagnostic Tool in Children With Chronic Cough

Abstract: Chronic cough is a common symptom of many underlying respiratory and non-respiratory disorders and may be associated with less serious causes, such as gastroesophageal reflux and nasal diseases. Chronic cough in children differs from that in adults with respect to its etiologies and management since it can indicate a symptom of an underlying disease in children. Guidelines for managing chronic cough in children are based on recording the history, followed by physical examination, chest radiography, and spirome… Show more

“…This study was performed using a modified Delphi method by de Kleuver et al ( 11 , 12 ). To review the primary literature, eight fields of chronic cough in children were considered: the composition of chronic cough etiology in Chinese children using multicenter studies ( 10 ); recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of children with rhinosinusitis ( 13 ); guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough in Chinese children ( 1 ); expert consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic wet cough in Chinese children ( 14 ); management pathways or algorithms for use in children with chronic cough (CVD) ( 15 ); guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough in adults and children ( 6 ); guidelines and expert consensus on chronic cough in children ( 16 ); and the use of medical history as a diagnostic tool for chronic cough in children ( 17 ). To summarize the above literature, we described the process of diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough in children, combined with the current pediatric situation in primary Chinese hospitals.…”

“…Chronic cough (defined as a cough lasting for >4 and 8 weeks in children and adults, respectively) is also a prevalent symptom of several underlying respiratory and non-respiratory conditions [2]. Chronic cough in children varies from that in adults in terms of cause and management [1,3]. Bronchiectasis is a spectrum of suppurative lung diseases characterised by persistent wet/sputum-productive cough and airway dilatation, with a substantial burden on patients and healthcare expenditure [4,5].…”
