HIV-Testing Behavior and Associated Factors Among MSM in Chongqing, China

Abstract: The high and climbing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rates among Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) bring huge pressure and challenge to acquired immune deficiency syndrome response work in China. This study examined HIV-testing behavior and describes the characteristics of recently tested MSM in Chongqing to address targeting HIV prevention interventions. Two consecutive cross-sectional surveys were conducted among Chongqing MSM using respondent-driven sampling in 2009 and 2010. “…34 Our study is also consistent with findings from previous studies among Chinese MSM that “ever-testers” had a lower likelihood of being HIV-infected than non-testers. 17,4244 We observed a strong signal that higher lifetime HIV testing frequency was associated with a decreased odds of HIV infection among Chinese MSM. In our study, the benefit of HIV testing for reducing HIV risk was most notable among men who had ≥10 lifetime male sexual partners.…”

“…60,61 The duration of living in a city is also an indicator of HIV testing uptake among Chinese MSM. 44 We found those who lived for fewer years in Beijing tended to have no prior testing experience. MSM with less income were also less likely to ever test.…”

“…Located in southwest China, Chongqing has an increased HIV prevalence among MSM, precipitously from 11.6% in 2009 to 15.4% in 2010[38]; Henan Province is in the middle China, with a HIV infection rate among MSM increased from 4.69% in 2008 to 8.33% in 2013[39]; Zhengzhou, as the provincial capital of Henan province, has a HIV incidence rate of 7.4/100 Person Years among MSM[4]. Located in northeast China, Harbin has a moderate HIV epidemic compared to other areas[40], its prevalence among MSM increased from 1.0% in 2006 to 7.5% in 2010[41]; Both Jiangxi and Jiangsu province are located in southeast China.…”

“…In Western countries, the HIV prevalence rate and estimated morbidity rate of young MSM are also high, and they are also a key population of HIV transmission [10]. Globally, even in countries or regions with high HIV prevalence, the HIV testing rate among MSM remains low (1.6-41.7%) [11], and the annual HIV testing rate among MSM in China is also low (44.6-69%) [12][13][14]. The key work is to promote HIV testing and reduce high-risk behaviors in MSM to finally achieve the goal of the first 90% target.…”
