“…When stratifying the association assessment using Minnan or Hakka separately, the protective effect of DRB1‫5040ء‬ against leprosy in Minnan remained significant (OR ϭ 0.04, 95% CI ϭ 0.003-0.719, p ϭ 0.0002, p c ϭ 0.006), whereas the Hakka dataset was too small to analyze. Notheless, similimar results should be expect with a greater Hakka sample, as in our previous HLA studies on Taiwanese populations [29,30]), the frequency of DRB1‫5040ء‬ in Minnan was the same as Hakka (6.4%). In adddion, Hildeshein et al also reported a DRB1‫5040ء‬ frequency of 8.5% in Taiwanese [31], which support the results reported in this study (Taiwanese, 8.7%; Minnan, 8.3%) or our previous population study.…”

“…We have also revealed the presence of B*1518 in the donors in the Taiwanese marrow donor registry [21] and its cord blood units [4]. The average frequency of B*1518 in the Taiwanese population was relatively low (0.9% approximately) [19,20], which explains why it was not detected in the API ethnic group in the United States [3]. It is noteworthy that both B*1518 donors in this study carried Cw*0704.…”

“…Interestingly, haplotype A*1101-B*1518-Cw*0704, observed in the Taiwanese cohort, was not reported in the API group but was in the European, AA, and HIS ethnic groups of NMDP donors [3]. B*1518 was observed in the Taiwanese Hakka and Minna ethnicities but not in the Taiwanese indigenous population [19,20]. We have also revealed the presence of B*1518 in the donors in the Taiwanese marrow donor registry [21] and its cord blood units [4].…”

“…The ethnicity of the subjects' parents was determined using a questionnaire by asking about parental ethnicity. To increase the sample size, we included the results of the Minnan and Hakka groups in Taiwan published by Chu et al [11,12] and determined a sample size of 212 for the Minnan group and 66 for the Hakka group. The total allele types for the three ethnic groups were 15, 43, and 25 in HLA-A, -B, and -DRB1 loci, respectively.…”
