HMS1 interacts with HMS1I to regulate very‐long‐chain fatty acid biosynthesis and the humidity‐sensitive genic male sterility in rice (Oryza sativa)

Abstract: Environment-sensitive genic male sterility (EGMS) lines are used widely in two-line hybrid breeding in rice (Oryza sativa). At present, photoperiod-sensitive genic male sterility (PGMS) lines and thermo-sensitive genic male sterility (TGMS) lines are predominantly used in two-line hybrid rice, with humidity-sensitive genic male sterility (HGMS) lines rarely being reported. Here, it is shown that HUMIDITY-SENSITIVE GENIC MALE STERILITY 1 (HMS1), encoding a b-ketoacyl-CoA synthase, plays key roles in the biosynth… Show more

“…A shorter pollen longevity has been reported for the following rice mutants: glossy1-4 (osgl1-4), humidity-sensitive genetic male sterility1 (hms1) and oxidosqualene cyclases 12/poaceatapetol synthase 1 (ososc12/ospts1) ( Table 1) [42][43][44]. The defects in the pollen wall, particularly in the pollen coat, observed in these mutants result in excessive fast dehydration, leading to humidity-sensitive male sterility [42][43][44]. The pollen coat fills the cavities of the pollen exine and protects the male gametophyte from dehydration in rice.…”

“…Two-line HR technology is regulated by environmental alterations such as photoperiod and/or temperature and humidity conditions and it also termed as an environmental sensitive-genic-male-sterility (EGMS) system. Therefore, we are reporting that the EGMS system can be categorized as the photo-sensitive-genic-male-sterility (PGMS) system, temperature-sensitive-genic-male-sterility (TGMS) system, and humidity-sensitive-genic-male-sterility (HGMS) system [ 41 , 42 ]. The two-line HR technology gained popularity due to simplicity in creating sterile-rice lines by PGMS, TGMS, and HGMS systems and fertility can be restored via crossing any fertile rice-line and there is no need for a specific restorer-rice line as compared to three-line HR technology.…”

“…In the two-line hybrid technology, EGMS lines are used as the male sterile lines and maintainer lines under contrary environmental conditions, and have the advantage of broad restorer lines. The EGMS lines include photoperiod-sensitive genic male sterility (PGMS) lines, thermo-sensitive genic male sterility (TGMS) lines, and the recently reported humidity-sensitive genic male sterility (HGMS) lines [5]. In upland cotton, CCRI9106, a PGMS mutant isolated from CCRI040029 was controlled by one pair of recessive genes, and showed male sterile under long-day conditions and fertile under short-day conditions [6,7].…”

“…Recently, a HGMS line is isolated in rice and the corresponding gene (HMS1) is characterized as a putative β-ketoacyl-CoA synthase (KCS). The hsm1 mutants show abnormal anther cuticle without white crystals and signi cant reduction of bacula and tryphine in pollen wall [5]. A glossy family protein, OsGL1-4, is require for the synthesis of very long chain alkanes, and is essential to the pollen adhesion and hydration.…”
