Holocene hydrological and vegetation changes in southern France inferred by the study of an alluvial travertine system (Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert, Hérault)

Abstract: A geobotanical study of the travertine system of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert (southern France) was carried out in order to reconstruct the local Holocene environment in a region where the postglacial vegetation history is poorly documented. The travertinisation process has started at ca. 8500 cal. BP, in a landscape dominated by Pinus sylvestris type (probably Pinus nigra sub sp. salzmannii). Around 7000 cal. BP, the travertine system recorded torrential events not evidenced at the regional scale, showing the part… Show more

“…Earlier, Vitis pollen grains may originate from wild grapes naturally growing in this area (Ali et al, 2008). Moreover, archeobotanical studies demonstrate that Neolithic and Bronze Age populations were gathering wild grapes and thus may have favored this taxon near the lagoon (Alonso et al, 2007(Alonso et al, , 2008Chabal and Terral, 2007).…”

“…In the archeologial record, evidence for grape cultivation occurs from the Iron Age and accounts for the presence of Vitis pollen after 2500 cal BP (Alonso et al, 2007(Alonso et al, , 2008. “…En Alemania, ha sido citado en el interglacial Riss-Würn en la localidad de Weimar-Ebringsdorf (Vent, 1955). También en Francia apareció en el Último Periodo Glacial en el Vallée du Gardon (Bazile-Robert, 1979), y en los depósitos holocenos de Saint Guilhem-le-Désert -l'Herault- (Lecoeuvre, et al, 2008;Ali, et al, 2008).…”
