Home and office uroflowmetry for evaluation of LUTS from benign prostatic enlargement

Abstract: A group of 107 patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) from benign prostatic enlargement (BPE) participated to the HOUSE Study (Home and Office Uroflowmetry Specific Evaluation). Patients received routine investigation, consisting of medical history taking, physical examination including digital rectal examination, prostate-specific antigen (PSA), assessment of symptoms listed both on the International Prostate Symptom Score and on ICS-male questionnaire. We examined the results of uroflowmetry evalu… Show more

“…2F),16–19 the Da Capo™, a weight transducer clinic flowmeter adapted for home use (Fig. 2G),20, 21 the PUFS2000,22 and the Home UroData system 23. These devices obtain an automated frequency volume chart along with measurements of the full flow trace and voided volume for multiple voids, without the need for the user to document results.…”

“…Currently, the maximum flow rate is examined at a single time point using uroflowmetry in a medical office. This single measure does not provide a reliable marker of lower urinary tract symptoms, as most patients are unable to relax and void as they usually do . Home uroflowmetry can minimize such hesitation, and thus, provide a more reliable measure of flow rate .…”

“…The Qmax may predict the degree of obstruction in patients with BPH because there is a negative correlation between Qmax and prostate volume [31]. The Qmax is a reliable and objective measurement to evaluate the symptoms of BPH patients, because there is negative correlation between Qmax and the International Continence Society-BPH (ICS-BPH) symptom score [32]. The ICS-BPH symptom score is obtained by using an ICSmale questionnaire, and has a high level of psychometric validity and reliability [33].…”
