HomeVisor: Adapting Home Network Environments

Abstract: This paper considers SDN, and OpenFlow in particular, as technology to develop the next generation of more flexible, configurable and automated home networks. We identify the problems with the current state of the art in home networking, which includes a lack of user engagement in home network maintenance and configuration, Internet bandwidth limitations, and a lack of ISP reconfiguration and troubleshooting tools. We propose HomeVisor; a novel remote home network management tool. In this paper, we evaluate Ho… Show more

“…Similarly, Kim et al [21] proposed to control the usage of different persons at home based on user pre-defined cap usage rules. Other studies [22,23] proposed an SDN revisit of the home router to provide user-friendly management interfaces and services, such as providing a separate slice for guest devices, or supporting user-controlled device onboarding. The Future Spaces solution addresses these different aspects, by providing simple user controls and automation to pilot the home network through slicing.…”

“…In contrast to allowing users to manage their own networks, an approach to delegate the residential network management to third‐party experts is proposed. HomeVisor proposes to split the residential network into slices. Each slice is under the management of a specific third party, alleviating the residential user from the burden of management tasks.…”
