Hoop stress test on new high strength alloy laminated Bi-2223 conductor

Abstract: Bi-2223, despite its high field transport performance, lacks mechanical strength and relies on lamination technology for applications where both current density and mechanical strength are important. The hoop stress limits of a newly available high-strength Bi-2223 has been measured by two different methods at LNCMI-Grenoble and Tsukuba Magnet Laboratory. The measurements confirm the new conductor's high tensile strength up to 400 MPa. We discuss briefly the role of bending strain with the aid of a supplementa… Show more

“…This leads, at B = 31.2 T and the achieved sample currents to an ε total of 0.94% for barrel 1 and to 0.95% for barrel 2. These values are significantly higher than reported by others [48, 57]. Despite these high loads, barrel 1 did not break even after 15 load-cycles, whereas barrel 2 broke at the 4 th load-cycle.…”

“…Sumitomo uses the product names DI-BSCCO HT-SS and DI-BSCCO HT-CA for laminated versions of their bare DI-BSCCO Type H tape. The allowable stresses in type HT-SS and HT-CA (270 MPa and 250 MPa respectively [48]) are drastically improved compared to the bare conductor. The allowable strain, however, is still limited by the yield strain of the lamination, i.e.…”

“…Critical tensile stress c s decreases with bending diameter D, dropping to ∼300 MPa with D=80 mm, and ∼200 MPa with D=50 mm. The prediction is consistent with this experiment and c s =400 MPa at D=108 mm found by Miyoshi et al[23].…”
