Hopf Term and the Effective Lagrangian for the Skyrmions in a Two-Dimensional Electron Gas at SmallgFactor

Abstract: We study interacting electrons in two dimensions moving in the lowest Landau level under the condition that the Zeeman energy is much smaller than the Coulomb energy and the filling factor is one. In this case, Skyrmion quasiparticles play an important role. Here, we present a simple and transparent derivation of the corresponding effective Lagrangian. In its kinetic part, we find a nonzero Hopf term, the prefactor of which we determine rigorously. In the Hamiltonian part, we calculate, by means of a gradient … Show more

“…In a recent Letter [1], Apel and Bychkov presented a microscopic calculation of the prefactor Q of the topological Hopf term in the effective action of a twodimensional electron gas in a magnetic field at the filling factor n 1. This derivation is questionable.…”

“…There has been a lot of effort to derive an effective field theory for the quantum Hall ferromagnet [12,13,14,15,16,7]. The result in terms of a gradient expansion of the unit magnetization vectorm is essentially an O(3) model, i.e.…”
