Horizontal Drilling and Completion: Denmark

Abstract: The application of horizontal drilling technique to improve production performance from elected tight chalk reservoirs in the Danish sector of the North Sea has shown to be technically feasible and economically viable. Maersk Oil and Gas has drilled and completed three horizontal wells with horizontal drainhole sections ranging from 1000 feet to 3000 feet and with displacement of some 9000 feet from the wellhead platform slot. The essential early planning aspects leading to … Show more

“…15,16 The need for this type of information has been noted in the literature. 17 For illustrative purposes, we assume that vertical fractures are created perpendicular to the horizontal well; all production is a result of the hydraulic fractures (Le., the horizontal well serves merely as a conduit for the produced fluids); pressure drops in the fracture from flow convergence toward the horizontal well at the fracture center are negligible l8 ; distances between fractures are identical, where d=distance; and fracture lengths are such that d> (xf ) max where (xf)max is the length of the longest fracture. We do not restrict the fracture conductivity.…”

“…The first horizontal well was drilled in 1987 (Andersen, 1988) and the PSI system developed ( Figure 3) (Damgaard, 1992). Water injection was initiated in 1989 injecting into the matrix below the fracture pressure.…”

“…1 The completion method allows each zone to be mechanically isolated from the rest during both stimulation & production. 2,3 The work string is used both for perforating, stimulating, and isolating the individual zones. 4 The annulus between the work string and the liner is open during stimulation, providing excellent bottom hole pressure measurements using the static annulus pressure.…”
