Horizontal Wells are Now used for Industrial Developments

Abstract: A vertical, or deviated, well, remains in a reservoir for a short distance only. Horizontal wells remain in the producing formation for several hundred meters, providing better productivity conditions. ELF AQUITAINE and IFP (French Institute of Petroleum) have initiated, in 1978, a research project aimed at very progressively solving the drilling and completion problems encountered when drilling a horizontal well. Several wells have been drilled and successfully completed, down to… Show more

“…5 In 1982, Jacques Bosio of Elf directed one of the very early controlled horizontal wells, and the first one offshore at Rospo Mare in Italy. A visit with Mr. Bosio to the site convinced NPD that horizontal completions were possible once the down hole measuring technology while drilling improved [30]. The enabling technologies to achieve this were in place or under development.…”

“…In this early application, heavy oil production from the horizontal well was twenty times that expected from a standard vertical well producer, while the cost was only double (Bosio, 1986). Since then the oil industry has continuously enhanced the potential of horizontal wells and the demand for technology for supporting this activity has been for the most part satisfied.…”
