“…During prepartal luteolysis, i.e. 36-48 h prior to birth, the increase in PGF 2a or of its major metabolite 15-keto-13,14-dihydro PGF 2a (PGFM) over basal levels is still minimal (Königsson et al 2001), and PGFM profiles in maternal peripheral blood are distinctly different from luteolysis in cyclic cows, where pronounced prostaglandin spikes of endometrial origin are observed preceding or concomitant with luteolysis (Peterson et al 1975, Kindahl et al 1976, Vighio & Liptrap 1986. Thus, the only clear role that can be attributed to the substantial increase in PGF 2a or PGFM during the immediate peripartal period , Edqvist et al 1978, Bosu et al 1984, Meyer et al 1989 seems to be related to myometrial activity.…”

“…From histological criteria it is thought that the number of non-atretic follicles > 5-0 mm in diameter is low (^3 per cow) due to a high incidence of atresia in follicles enlarging from 2 to 5 mm in diameter (Rajakoski, 1960;Scaramuzzi et al, 1980). Androstenedione, testosterone and oestradiol are major secretory products of bovine follicles and their concentrations in peripheral plasma fluctuate markedly, and often asynchronously, both within days and between each day of the oestrous cycle (Dobson & Dean, 1974; Lemon & Saumande, 1974;Peterson, Fairclough, Payne & Smith, 1975;Peterson, Fairclough & Smith, 1978; Wise, Caton, Thatcher, Lehrer & Fields, 1982). However, it has been difficult to extrapolate from hormone concentrations in peripheral plasma, the degree of follicular activity within the ovary.…”

“…Endometrial PGE 2 and PGF 2α secretion in response to OT during the estrous cycle PGE2 concentration in the culture medium was higher than that of PGF2α from the early I (PGE2, 0.45 ± 0.04 µg/g tissue; PGF2α, 0.17 ± 0.02 µg/g tissue) to the late luteal stage (PGE2, 0.44 ± 0.03 µg/g tissue; PGF2α, 0.28 ± 00.2 µg/g tissue), and declined at the regressed stage (PGE2, 0.13 ± 0.01 µg/g tissue; Fig. 3).…”
