Horticultural plant use as a so‐far neglected pillar of ex situ conservation

Abstract: We demonstrate how native and nonnative plant taxa used as ornamentals in private and public urban green spaces can significantly strengthen plant conservation in time of extinctions by expanding the capacity for ex situ living collections and raising awareness among professional and private gardeners and plant collectors. Based on global databases, we document the current representation of threatened plant taxa in horticulture compared to collections in botanical gardens. A substantial number of threatened ta… Show more

“…CG is the seeding and planting of declining native plants in public and private urban and rural green spaces. Production and gardening of declining native species can facilitate dispersal, thereby bolstering these species populations (der Lippe & Kowarik, 2008; Ismail et al, 2021;Rudd et al, 2002). Increased demand for such species could furthermore create an economic market, thereby increasing private revenue streams for declining native plant production and conservation (Segar et al, 2022).…”

“…
Gardens, ubiquitous across urban and rural settings, are increasingly recognized as promising players in biodiversity conservation, mirroring the role of botanic gardens in conservation horticulture as vital repositories for at-risk plant species and an insurance policy against extinction in the wild (Affolter, 1997;Gratzfeld, 2017;Ismail et al, 2021;Mounce et al, 2017). Recently, the concept of conservation gardening has emerged as a participatory approach to biodiversity restoration, focusing on cultivating declining native species in private gardens and blending commercial horticulture with conservation efforts, while fostering public engagement (Munschek et al, 2023;Segar et al, 2022).
