Host stress influences oviposition preference and performance of a pine sawfly

Abstract: Abstract. The effect of ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Doug]. ex Laws) water stress, measured by xylem water potential, on oviposition preference and egg development of Neodiprion fulviceps was determined by two laboratory experiments in 1987 and 1988. In the first experiment, adult females were allowed to choose between foliage from water‐stressed, watered, and untreated control trees. Significant differences were found between treatments in xylem water potential in 1987 but not in 1988. Females chose wate… Show more

“…It has been hypothesized that the combined action of changes in host plant quality due to drought stress and insect's response to increased temperature could allow insect populations to escape natural enemies [35,84]. This hypothesis was not verified for I. typographus and other Scolytidae during the 2003 drought: in Northeastern France, captures of Thanasimus formicarius L., a parasitoid of these Scolytids occurred earlier in 2003 than usually recorded (Fig.…”

“…In this study, we examine the effects of resource availability (nutrients and water) on plant traits, on host selection, and on the performance of adult and larval leaf beetles. The availability of resources (e.g., nutrients, water, light) is a key determinant of plant quality and herbivore preference and performance (Tisdale and Wagner 1991;Mensah and Madden 1992;Jauset et al 1998;Koricheva et al 1998;Mutikainen et al 2000). Moreover, these factors often interact to alter plant suitability to herbivores (Larsson et al 1986;Coleman and Jones 1988;Tisdale and Wagner 1991).…”
