Hosting Friends Versus Hosting Relatives: Is Blood Thicker Than Water?

Abstract: Little research has been undertaken to examine visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travel from the perspective of hosts. Additionally, little research has explored the differences between VFs and VRs, treating VFR as one homogenous group. This research examined the hosts' perspective of hosting friends versus relatives through in‐depth interviews with 34 local residents in three contrasting destinations in Australia. Key differences were found between the experiences of hosting friends versus relatives, with … Show more

“…This study further supports the broad notion that residents, as VFR hosts, have a substantial impact on the tourism activity of their community and contribute to economic and cultural development (e.g., Backer, 2012; Jackson, 1990). Further, travellers and hosts are not homogenous, and additional understanding of different hosting experiences is beneficial (Rogerson, 2017; Yousuf & Backer, 2017). Young et al (2007) found hosting frequency and level of information sharing was not affected by the length of time hosts had lived in the community, but perhaps due to the resident demographics, immigration was not included as a variable.…”

“…Hosting shifts context, inserting a leisure lens into the routine, where recent immigrants who are comparatively unfamiliar with their surroundings become guide, expert, and tourist (Humbracht, 2015;Yousuf & Backer, 2017). Hosts can feel obliged to entertain, and search for and engage in enjoyable and sometimes novel spaces and activities, helping them become more familiar with and attached to their community (Choi & Fu, 2018;Dutt & Ninov, 2017).…”

“…Seaton and Tagg (1995) also disaggregated the VFR market into three categories based on the visited parties: visiting friends (VF); visiting relatives (VR); and, visiting both. A clear understanding of the distinctiveness between these groups, especially between the VF and the VR, remains unrealised (Yousuf & Backer, 2017;Seaton & Tie, 2015). More research is needed to understand the travel behaviour of particular VFR groups, as well as the differences among them.…”

“…Although type of accommodation is a defining factor for VFR tourism, it is not so for VFR guests. VFR hosts are defined as someone who has friends and/or relatives visit and stayed at least one night in their destination (Yousuf & Backer, 2017). They normally provide various hospitality services to their guests including accommodation, food and travel guidance.…”
