Hot Spots in Ag Core−Au Shell Nanoparticles Potent for Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Studies of Biomolecules

Abstract: The vicinity of metallic nanostructures that provides intense optical fields is termed as "hot spot". Any molecule in close proximity to these hot spots will give rise to an increased surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) signal. We have synthesized Ag core-Au shell (core-shell) nanoparticles (NP) with nanopores, which act as hot spots in the SERS measurements. We have demonstrated a large enhancement in SERS studies of various molecules using core-shell NP with hot spots, which is better than using silv… Show more

“…Additionally, these spectra show that the LLI does not adversely affect the sensor, as comparisons with literature [40][41][42][43] . In all cases the signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity is as good (if not better) for these analytes at the LLI.…”

“…The hot spots in bimetallic coated nanoparticles with pinholes were investigated by means of experimental method [37]. On the theoretical side, the nonlocality should be involved to study the hot spots in the enhancement of Raman signal due to the pinholes or other nano-defects at rather small scale.…”

“…Because the Fermi level for gold is lower than that for silver, the gold atoms in the core can have a strong electronic effect on the surface silver atoms by charge transfer, causing the surface silver atoms adjacent to the gold core to become more active than the silver atoms in monometallic silver nanoparticles. 26 Therefore, as a SERS-active substrate, Au/Ag core-shell nanoparticles can enhance Raman signals of 4-MBA more effectively than gold nanoparticles and silver nanoparticles.…”
