Hotels’ occupancy rates and convergence: Empirical evidence from the first pandemic wave

Abstract: The scope of this study is to unravel possible convergence clubs regarding the occupancy rates of the hotel industry in the US states in the aftermath of the first COVID-19 pandemic wave. For this reason, the underlying paper resorts to the application of the generic convergence algorithm developed in Phillips and Sul (2007) for a sample of 50 US states over the daily period ranging from 01.12.2019 to 26.07.2020. The empirical analysis supports the identification of two primary convergence clubs consisting of … Show more

“…These eight source markets represent close to 40% of total stays in Andalusian hotel establishments and around 70% of overnight stays made exclusively by international travellers [47,48]. For this reason, DMOs and hotel operators traced consumers' demand patterns and occupancy rate to stimulate tourism demand [49,50]. The data on the occupancy rate of Andalusian hotels by province were collected from the IECA organization and contains annual and monthly aggregated occupancy rates of hotel classes from 2004 to 2022.…”

“…Another stream of more recent studies employs the log t test developed by Phillips and Sul (2007) for club convergence and provides mixed evidence (see e.g. Kourtidis et al, 2018; Me´rida et al, 2016; Pizzuto and Sciortino, 2021; Polemis et al, 2023). It is worth mentioning that the variants of unit root tests used in the literature do not consider the possibility of asymmetric convergence speed.…”

“…The importance of tourism growth (TOUR) in the generation of economic growth has been extensively recognized by academics and policymakers base the increase in their macroeconomic data on the expansion and development of these findings (Manrai et al, 2018;Flores-Muñoz et al, 2019;Nguyen et al, 2020;Polemis et al, 2021). Since the work by Balaguer and Cantavella-Jorda (2002), was the first one to formally refer to the tourism-led growth hypothesis (TLGH), a plethora of authors has investigated that discipline [1].…”
