How can community engagement in health research be strengthened for infectious disease outbreaks in Sub-Saharan Africa? A scoping review of the literature

Abstract: Background Community engagement (CE) is a well-established practical and scholarly field, recognised as core to the science and ethics of health research, for which researchers and practitioners have increasingly asked questions about desired standards and evaluation. In infectious disease outbreak contexts, questions may be more complex. However, it is unclear what body of knowledge has been developed for CE specifically as it applies to emerging infectious diseases. This scoping review seeks … Show more

“…For example, a citizen science project based out of Texas accepted kissing bugs from the public to assess the distribution, phenology, and Trypanosoma cruzi prevalence [56] and similar methods and data on Ixodes pacificus and Ixodes scapularis and their associated pathogens was uncovered for the U.S. [57,58]. In the field of infectious disease, community-engaged science is strengthened with consistent and clear communication to build relationships, development of contextual knowledge, and adapting over time to improve the project [59]. We fully anticipate that this communityengagement project that incorporates a community-driven mosquito surveillance program can be modified and used by others.…”

“…As Public and Community Engagement to support health research is increasingly focusing on the need to inform research practice in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), the range of approaches and goals have diversified ( 1 4 ). School engagement with health research (SEHR) is a growing field of engagement in LMICs which is not yet widely described in the literature ( 5 , 6 ).…”
