How complete is a transurethral resection of the prostate ?

Abstract: This study counters the theory that a complete resection of the prostate is routinely achieved. The endoscopic appearances probably imply a complete resection of the adenoma but a considerable volume of the gland remains. This has important implications for the detection of prostate carcinoma at TURP and for the staging of the disease.

“…ILC treatment diminished the median prostate volume from 49 ml preoperatively to 35 ml after 1 year; these results are not significantly different from the corresponding values for the TURP-treated (Fig. 2), and are comparable to TURP data in the literature (12). The future role of ILC in the treatment of BPE is debatable, at least in the present setting, until long-term results are available.…”

“…Gallucci et al [10] also evaluated pressure-¯ow outcomes after electrovaporization; they reported a reduction in gland volume of 84% one month after electrovaporization. While this value is considerably greater than after conventional TURP [27,28] it is consistent with the urodynamic evidence for the relief of obstruction of most patients treated. Others have noted similar improvement in pressure-¯ow criteria after TUEVAP [29].…”

“…This was felt to represent a clinically relevant debulking in these canine prostates (pretreatment volume of 38.6 cm 3 ) based on published measurements of tissue removal from human TURP procedures in comparably sized prostates. 19 From a clinical perspective, only one culture-proven urinary tract infection was identified, and one instance of urinary retention occurred subsequent to traumatic self-removal of a urinary catheter.…”
