How do geomorphic characteristics affect the source of tree water uptake in restored river floodplains?

Abstract: Alpine rivers and their floodplains have been highly modified by human activities during the last decades. River restoration projects aim to counteract these negative impacts and to restore ecosystem services provided by riparian habitats. We studied two recently restored river sites in the Ahr/Aurino and Mareit/Mareta Rivers (Italian Alps) to investigate how geomorphic conditions, soil moisture, and groundwater level affect the source of water used by grey alder (Alnus incana (L.) Moench). We compared the iso… Show more

“…SPC samples from alder, apple, and chestnut trees were less negative in δ 18 O than CVD samples, but for apple tree samples, the differences between SPC and CVD-TwB were relatively small (the median of the absolute differences was 0.57 ‰, n = 8). (Engel et al, 2022), Laas/Lasa: δ 2 H = 7.62 × δ 18 O + 3.67 (Penna et al, 2021), Ressi: δ 2 H = 8.12 × δ 18 O + 14.75 (Marchina et al, 2020). The three plots on the right column represent a zoom in on SPC, CVD-T, CVD-TwB, CVD-WC, and CVD-TcT samples.…”

“…Various studies used natural tracers combining 222 Rn (hereinafter: radon) with ions, stable water isotopes δ 18 O and δ 2 H, or radioactive isotope 3 H (hereinafter: tritium) to investigate GSI at larger scales (Atkinson et al, 2014; Cook, 2013; Schubert et al, 2020). To identify losing stream conditions, techniques are more diveres and include measuring radon attenuation in groundwater (Schubert et al, 2006), radon combined with transient storage modelling (e.g., Bourke et al, 2014), assigning δ 2 H end‐member mixing models (e.g., Engel et al, 2022), analysing diurnal oscillations of electrical conductivity and radon residence times (Vogt et al, 2010), and calculating mass budgets of tritium (Hanslik et al, 2017; Santschi et al, 1987). However, the majority of these studies focused on GSI at the reach scale and experimental field studies rarely investigated GSI at regional scales.…”
