How Does Takt Production Contribute to Trade Flow in Construction?

Abstract: Takt production has gained increased attention over the past decade inside the Lean Construction community. Several case studies have shown that implementing takt has positive effects on construction production, increasing flow by decreasing various types of waste. However, evidence on how takt production actually affects the flow of trades has been contradictory. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of how implementing takt production, which heavily focuses on improving the flow of proc… Show more

“…Breaking up the tasks to fit a Takt time creates a rhythm of work and ensures workflow reliability (Binninger et al, 2019). Takt planning also allows for early recognition of workflow issues (Frandson et al, 2013;Kujansuu et al, 2020). Furthermore, it leads to an increase in workflow due to use of capacity buffers instead of time or space buffers (Kujansuu et al, 2020;Tommelein, 2020).…”

Furthermore, it leads to an increase in workflow due to use of capacity buffers instead of time or space buffers (Kujansuu et al, 2020;Tommelein, 2020). A capacity buffer means that a slower trade might make up work on days not scheduled or have another worker come in to help speed up the work (Yassine et al, 2014;Tommelein, 2020).…”

“…Takt production is a potential way to increase production flow, efficiency, and production performance. The documented benefits include significant production duration reductions (Frandson et al, 2013;Binninger et al, 2018), improved quality, safety (Heinonen and Seppänen, 2016), and worker productivity (Kujansuu et al, 2020), with increased transparency of communication and production control effectiveness (Linnik et al, 2013). These benefits have been documented even when implementing takt production for the first time, with no prior experience utilizing the method (e.g., Lehtovaara et al, 2019).…”
