How far can one go? How distance matters in island development

Abstract: Island development trajectories are heavily impacted by their relevance, similarity, complementarity and value in relation to continental development pathways. I would argue that this is so, also because of the physical proximity of islands to their respective metropolis, making the former island units in and of their respective mainland. This paper proposes a politics of distance. It examines how physical detachment from the mainland (and from central government) impacts on an island's ability to determine it… Show more

“…However, where publications related to islands that were adjacent to larger land masses within the same state, or where they were overseas territories or dependencies of a larger state, these were included. This is because insular entities within a larger state can still suffer from many of the issues associated with more traditionally peripheral islands (Moscardo, 2011;Chaperon & Bramwell, 2013;Sinclair-Maragh & Gursoy, 2015;Baldacchino, 2019) Only publications written in English were included in this study. After applying these criteria, 132 articles remained for use in this review.…”

“…This theme contained a broad mixture of cases, ranging from responses to climate change and resource depletion through entrepreneurship to the role of community alliances and collaboration in the face of dominant cultures. Given the spatial context of this research, it is surprising to note the lack of publications with this theme, with the notable exceptions of work by Baldacchino (2005Baldacchino ( , 2006Baldacchino ( , 2010Baldacchino ( , 2019 and other associated with the island studies field.…”

“…The island as a separate entity from the mainland faces many challenges to retain its population and achieve sustainable development. Baldacchino (2019) explores the impact of the physical separation of an island on its developmental fate and concludes that islands farther from the mainland have a more difficult development way, but bigger autonomy, which can be an advantage while islands closer to the mainland are often more influenced by land centers and politics which complicates their possible development [3]. Marinković (2016) emphasizes that a key element of optimal sustainable development of island space is the classification of islands according to socio-geographical determinants, that is, the development requires scientifically based identification, systematization and comprehensive analysis [4].…”

“…Development opportunities of islands, and especially small islands, are constrained by limited local assets and resource endowments (Baldacchino, 2019). Their economies are often largely dependent on mainland countries.…”
